- A FUN DIY PROJECT
By Deborah Dean from Very Much Sew
Hi everyone! My name is Deb from Very Much Sew and I love crafting. I’m going to show you how to make a simple but cute wreath using yoyos, also known as Suffolk puffs. No need for sewing experience, in fact, it might even inspire you to start!
WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
You’ll need:
A foam wreath (mine is 20cm across)
Scrap fabric (cotton is best but anything with not much stretch will work)
Satin ribbon (I used around 5m to get around the wreath)
Small headed pins (or a hot glue gun, I’ll explain later)
Thread that matches your fabric
Needle
Scissors
Pen (I use a friction removing pen so I can just iron it away)
A little bit more ribbon for hanging
TO MAKE THE WREATH:
Use 2 pins (or a dot of hot glue) to secure the ribbon on the back of the wreath
Wrap the ribbon around, covering all the foam
Secure the end with 2 more pins or glue
Tie around the extra ribbon
TO MAKE THE YOYOS:
Cut the fabric into circles twice the diameter of what you’d like the yoyos to be – try drawing a line in removable pen first (I used 10cm circles)
Thread the needle and tie the 2 ends together
Pull the needle through the fabric, around 5mm in from the edge, until the knot stays in place
Pass the needle in and out of the fabric around 5mm each time until you make it all the way around the circle
Pull the thread to ruffle the fabric
Tie off the thread by wrapping the thread around the needle twice, pushing it through the fabric and pulling it tight
Cut off the extra thread
Repeat until you have enough yoyos!
PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER:
Putting it all together:
Attach the yoyos to the wrapped wreath with either 2 pins each or hot glue, depending on your preference
Hang it up!
I like using pins because you can take it apart and use different colours all year. It’s a great decoration for your home or a lovely gift. Tag me in your decoration pictures – I’d love to see your take on my wreath!
